The All-in-One File Renamer App:
Name Morpher

I designed a user-friendly desktop application that streamlines file management by providing powerful renaming tools. The app allows users to rename, append, and sequence file names effortlessly, while also supporting file type conversions for added versatility. Its intuitive interface ensures a seamless experience, whether managing a handful of files or an entire library.

Problem

Photographers often face the challenge of managing vast collections of images, whether from a single shoot or a series of projects. These files are typically named with a confusing mix of random numbers and letters assigned by cameras or software, making organization a daunting task.

SOLUTION

I designed a user-focused batch renaming software that enhances file organization, enabling users to efficiently modify naming properties of multiple files simultaneously.

The Main FEatures

Renaming was one of the fist feature requirements. The user needed to be able to change the names of all file simultaneously.

Adding a sequencing indicator to the end of the name was also a requirement. The user should be able to add a short string of numbers or letters to the end of the file name.

Appending the file name was another checkbox to hit. The user should be able to add a prefix or suffix to the file name.

Lastly, converting files should also be a priority feature. Photographers often need to submit different photo formats to different clients or empoyers.

User Flow

WireFrames

Wireframing allowed me to make small changes very quickly and swap out materials before diving into final designs. I tried to keep with the Apple design system, the Human Interface System, such as the stop light buttons on the top left and rounded corners.

Initial Page DEsigns

My initial designs lacked a simplified approach. I relied heavily on my inspiration, Adobe Bridge, and created too many pages and input settings. Throughout the initial stages, I began to understood that an excess amount of pages led to loss of focus and user frustration. Additionally, I experimented with various color schemes but ultimately reduced the color selection to emphasize the key actions the user can take, ensuring a more focused and intuitive experience.

Takeaway

In designing this renaming application, I considered the user flow of photographers to ensure a smooth and intuitive experience. By focusing primarily on the Apple design system, I pushed the boundaries of my design to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional interface. Throughout the process, I discovered various use cases for file management and explored different renaming techniques that can significantly enhance workflow efficiency for photographers and other creative professionals.
